STJ broke record in number of cases received in 2023 – 01/02/2024 – Panel

The STJ (Superior Court of Justice) received 461 thousand cases between January and December 26, 2023, registering the highest number of cases in a single year since the court was installed in 1989.

The previous mark, according to court data, was 404 thousand cases, in 2022.

At the closing session of the STJ in 2023, the president of the court, Maria Thereza de Assis Moura, stated that it is necessary to regulate the constitutional amendment that established the requirement to demonstrate the relevance of the federal issue for the admission of the special appeal, which is when there is the sending the processes for analysis by the STJ.

“We are carrying out numerous activities and programs, but without effectively overcoming the regulation of our filter, I believe, we will not be able to reduce our collection to the extent that we need”, stated the minister during the session.

As of December 18, 2023, 318 thousand cases were being processed in court.
