This is the sixth time the survey has been extended. Moraes considered the need to continue the investigations
The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, extended the inquiry that investigates the actions of an alleged digital militia for another 90 days. This is the sixth time that the investigations have been extended.
In the decision, published this Monday (27), Moraes points out that the extension of the deadline was granted “considering the need to continue the investigations and the existence of ongoing diligences”.
The inquiry was opened in July 2021 with the aim of investigating the performance of the alleged digital militias on social networks and finding out who are responsible for articulating and financing them. The investigation is in charge of the Federal Police.
In May 2022, the magistrate determined that investigations into the activities of digital militias and the attacks by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) on electronic voting machines should go hand in hand.
Moraes is the rapporteur in both cases, and considered that “the evidence collected for the investigation of the facts involving the live held by the President of the Republic on 7/29/2021, must be analyzed in conjunction with the main investigation conducted in Inq 4.874 /DF, whose object is a complex criminal organization, with a strong digital presence and with production, publication, financing and political nuclei, with the objective of attacking the Democratic State of Law”.
Joint assessment
The minister’s decision responded to a request from the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), which issued an opinion dealing with “the indispensability of a joint assessment of the facts under analysis”.
The understanding is that the investigations of the digital militias that “indicated the existence of a criminal association, called ‘Gabinete do Ódio’, dedicated to the dissemination of false news, offensive attacks on various people, authorities and institutions”, are related to the material seized in the other case.
