State transfers over R$ 20 million to Manaus City Hall for the Student Free Pass

The resources of the agreement signed through the UGPE benefit around 170,000 public school students

Manaus (AM) – The Government of Amazonas paid a new installment of R$ 20 million to the City of Manaus, as part of the agreement that makes the Student Free Pass possible. Transfers have been made regularly, every two months. By the end of this year, R$240 million will have been allocated to the program, benefiting around 170,000 students from state and municipal public schools.

The Student Free Pass guarantees free public transport, allowing students to commute to school daily, without the cost of a bus ticket. The agreement is administered by the Special Projects Management Unit (UGPE), an agency linked to the State Secretariat for Urban and Metropolitan Development (Sedurb).

Sedurb’s secretary, Marcellus Campêlo, points out that the installment, paid last Thursday (31), is the fourth transfer carried out this year, totaling an investment of R$ 80 million in 2023. Last year, R$ were passed on 118.2 million, with a municipal contribution of R$ 36 million. For this year, the government transfer of R$ 120 million is foreseen, with the same municipal contribution. “By the end of this year, we will have earmarked R$240 million for the program,” he explained.

The agreement goes beyond the Free Pass, and covers the Public Transport Restructuring and Qualification Program in the Municipality of Manaus. The protocol was initially signed in December 2021 and renewed in January 2023 by Governor Wilson Lima and the Mayor of Manaus, David Almeida.

Sedurb’s executive secretary, Daniella Jaime, points out that gratuity is not limited to the Free Pass, encompassing other benefits provided for in the Organic Law of the Municipality of Manaus. “The Student Free Pass plays a crucial role in combating school dropouts and supporting students from families in situations of social and economic vulnerability,” she concluded.
