SP’s birthday: will banks open on the holiday? – 01/22/2024 – Market

Bank branches will not open in São Paulo next Thursday (25), a municipal holiday celebrating the city’s anniversary.

According to Febraban (Brazilian Federation of Banks), the decision follows the 2020 resolution of the CMN (National Monetary Council), “which does not consider business days for the purposes of banking operations as Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays, as well as the second -Thursday and Carnival Tuesday”.

Even though it is not national, São Paulo’s birthday is considered an official holiday by Febraban. Payment slips and utility bills due on January 25th can be paid without additional charges on Friday (26th), a business day.

Febraban, however, recommends that customers use digital channels (websites and applications) offered by banks to make payments and other operations on days when bank branches are closed.

At B3, the Brazilian stock exchange headquartered in São Paulo, there will be regular trading, as trading is only stopped on national holidays.

“We have operations originating from all parts of the country and an important volume of negotiations carried out by foreign investors. We therefore chose to consider only the dates of national holidays in our calendar”, said Thiago Ferraz, trading superintendent at B3, in a press release .

Bank operations on national holidays in 2024

Of the 12 national holidays, eight will fall on a business day, and branches will not be open to serve customers.

Banks will also not open during Carnival and Corpus Christi, which are not national holidays, but are considered optional in much of the country.

• Holy Week: March 29th (Friday)
• Labor Day: May 1st (Wednesday)
• Corpus Christi: May 30th (Thursday)
• Proclamation of the Republic: November 15th (Friday)
• Black Awareness Day: November 20th (Wednesday)
• Christmas: December 25th (Wednesday)
• New Year’s Eve: December 31st (Friday)

Opening from 12pm

• Ash Wednesday: February 14th (Wednesday)

Four holidays will be on Saturday or Sunday, when there is no longer in-person service. Are they:

• Tiradentes: April 21st (Sunday)
• Independence of Brazil: September 7th (Saturday)
• Our Lady of Aparecida: October 12th (Saturday)
• All Souls’ Day: November 2nd (Saturday)
