Marcelo Paz also called for punishment for the fans involved in the attack.

The Copa Nordeste match, last Wednesday (22), ended in chaos at Arena Pernambuco. Images published on social media by the Fortaleza delegation show the moment the club’s bus is attacked by fans of the opposing team, Sport Club do Recife.

Sport fans threw stones and bombs as they left the bus, still at Arena Pernambuco. Six Fortaleza EC players were hit and the delegation was taken to the nearest hospital. Goalkeeper João Ricardo, full-backs Gonzalo Escobar and Dudu, defenders Titi and Brítez and midfielder Lucas Sasha were injured during the attack.

In a statement, the CEO of Fortaleza EC, Marcelo Paz, publicly released information about the health status of players injured in the attack. Marcelo Paz also called for punishment for the fans involved in the attack.

“I also think that I should only play again when they punish the criminals who did it. There really has to be a reaction. Not being able to just say a note of rejection, regret or ‘well, one more time…’. No, people! Are you going to wait for someone to die?”, reports Marcelo Paz. See video of the moment:

In a statement, Sport repudiated the episode: “Sport Club do Recife strongly repudiates the acts of violence committed against the Fortaleza Sport Clube delegation bus as it left the Pernambuco Arena after this Wednesday’s match.”

Fortaleza EC clarified the incident and presented a report on the medical situation of the injured players.
