Speech against Moraes gains strength and Lira’s ally puts pressure to overturn Brazão’s prison – 04/10/2024 – Brasília Hoje

The leader of União Brasil in the Chamber, Elmar Nascimento (União Brasil-BA), met with members of his party’s bench to press for a vote against maintaining the prison of deputy Chiquinho Brazão (no party-RJ), detained under accusation of ordering the murder of councilor Marielle Franco.

Nascimento appealed to his colleagues so that, if they consider that a position in this sense would generate a lot of stress, they should at least abstain and not participate in voting on the topic in the plenary.

This is because, to maintain the arrest, the endorsement of an absolute majority of the House is necessary — if it does not reach 257 votes, the detention decision is overturned.

The leader of the party is one of the main allies of the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL) and is tipped to succeed him in command of the House. The articulation occurs while the speech against the actions of the STF (Supreme Federal Court) minister Alexandre de Moraes gains strength in the House.

Some of the deputies understand that the magistrate has violated the prerogatives of parliamentarians. In addition to stating that in this case the act required by the Constitution to arrest a deputy is not characterized, they mention other recent decisions by the minister, such as search and seizure warrants in the offices of members of the Legislature.

The opinion of the rapporteur, Darci de Matos (PSD-SC), is being voted on by the CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission) of the Chamber and will then be analyzed by the House plenary.
