SP tests day care centers where children can stay for 12 hours – 08/01/2023 – Education

Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) announced this Tuesday morning (1st) that he will test child care for 12 hours in day care centers in São Paulo. The experimental project will start with 13 units.

The extended opening hours began this Tuesday and, according to the SME (Municipal Education Department), families of around 1,100 children, aged 0 to 3 years, have expressed interest.

In this model, parents can drop off children from 7 am to 7 pm at day care centers — two hours longer than the regular period. The department said it selected units with easy access by public transport for the experimental project.

“We realized that this was a demand from families, due to working hours, and we decided to try it out. We identified units that are close to good public transport options and consulted the parents of children enrolled in these day care centers”, said Fernando Padula, secretary of Education.

In the survey with parents, 70% said they were interested in extending day care center opening hours.

The secretariat selected a day care center from each of the city’s 13 teaching directorates. After the test with these units, the city hall will evaluate the feasibility of taking the extended hours to more day care centers.

“We are going to assess whether this schedule meets the needs of families. If the result is positive, we are going to study strategies to expand to more units.”

The secretary explained that the extension of opening hours generates a cost 22% higher than that of day care centers with regular attendance. The two-hour extension requires the hiring of more teachers and the provision of an extra meal for the children.

All units selected for the experimental project are from the indirect network, that is, they have an agreement with the city hall.

São Paulo has around 322,000 children up to three years old enrolled in the city’s public daycare centers.

Only children who were already enrolled in one of the 13 selected day care centers can be contemplated with the extended hours. Parents who are interested in this model can try to transfer the student to one of the contemplated units.
