South Africa presents innovative solutions in the areas of health, bioenergy and animal vaccines to Amapá – News of Brazil

During the Startup20 program in Amapá, different international delegations presented the governor, Clécio Luís, with innovative solutions that can be replicated in the Amazonian state, benefiting the population. In search of partnerships, South African representatives brought successful, low-cost projects in the areas of public health, animal vaccination and bioenergy.
Among the initiatives is the reproduction of prosthetics and medical equipment using 3D printing. The service is provided by the startup South Africa Makes and can be adapted to the reality of Amapá, serving mainly residents of more distant regions. The company also produces anatomical models aimed at students in the health sector.
“Among our products is a device for cases of obstructed breathing. It can be reproduced in communities that are difficult to access, such as indigenous and quilombola regions. It’s sustainable production, without waste!”detailed the startup’s co-founder, Cherise Dunn.
The South Africans also demonstrated interest in partnerships to carry out research into the potential for biofuel production from plants found in Amapá and presented a technique that allows vaccines to be preserved more safely at temperatures above 37º C.
Executive director Zipho Zwane is a representative of the Technology and Innovation Agency, a South African government entity that offers financial support and guidance to businesses with innovative potential. For Zwane, Brazil and South Africa have great geographic, social and historical similarities, which enhances the possibilities for partnerships between startups.
“I think it is possible to connect our startups to transfer skills and knowledge that can solve our difficulties. In many ways, Brazil is like South Africa, we have many values and a lot of shared history. Being here in Amapá is like being at home!”pointed out Zwane.
Upon learning about the initiatives, Clécio Luís explained to South Africans that startups, as innovative companies focused on solving problems, are part of the Government of Amapá’s strategy in search of socioeconomic development combined with environmental preservation.
“We want to use our good environmental indicators to promote social development. The paths presented by startups are what we seek. That’s why it’s so important for you to come! We are very interested in continuing to maintain dialogue with South Africa. This represents our mutual commitment to collaborating on innovation”pointed out Clécio Luís.
Throughout the Startup20 program, Clécio Luís also met with delegations from countries such as Switzerland and the United States.
More startups
The mayor of Santana, Bala Rocha, participated in the bilateral meeting and detailed that the second largest municipality in Amapá is working on the expansion of startups.
“It is very interesting to learn about this experience because the municipality of Santana recently granted tax reductions to startups. We want to expand these ideas in our city”, detailed Bala Rocha.
Also present at the meeting, the president of Sebrae Amapá, Josiel Alcolumbre, recognized the need to use innovative ideas for the benefit of the population. “Sebrae is available to maintain the relationship started today”assessed Alcolumbre.
Startup20, the largest international innovation, sustainability and technology event, was held by the Brazilian Startup Association, in partnership with the Government of Amapá and Sebrae.
