Small businesses were responsible for 62% of job openings in January

A survey carried out by Sebrae reveals that the volume of jobs created in small businesses increased by 52% in the first month of the year compared to 2023

In the economy as a whole, the total number of jobs created in January this year was 180.3 thousand — of this universe, 62% were in micro and small companies (MSE). Small businesses generated, in the first month of the year, 52% more jobs than those recorded in the same period of 2023. This is what the survey carried out by Sebrae shows based on data from the General Register of Employed and Unemployed Persons (Caged). There were 112 thousand new vacancies compared to 74 thousand recorded last year in micro and small companies alone.

For the president of Sebrae, Décio Lima, the Caged numbers confirm the prominent role of small businesses in the country.

“The 112 thousand jobs created in January alone reveal the importance of micro and small companies, which Sebrae has the responsibility to support, but, above all, the extraordinary successes of the policies of President Lula and vice Geraldo Alckmin. It is confirmation of that phrase that the president has permanently highlighted: ‘include the people in the budget’. The actions of MSEs are allowing Brazil to quickly get off the hunger map”,

said the president of Sebrae, Décio Lima.

“For all countries on the American continent, Brazil is the giant, the good example and Sebrae is working together with the Organization of American States (OAS) and other organizations seeking to open new markets”, adds the president of Sebrae. He remembers that the sector needs to count on the support of public policies, whether in credit or in the development of its businesses.

The Services (53,218), Construction (36,579) and Manufacturing (33,181) sectors contributed strongly to the creation of jobs in MSEs. In medium and large companies (MGE), in turn, the main sectors responsible for creating job vacancies were Manufacturing Industry (32,896), Services (21,848) and Construction (12,752).

The activities that contributed most to the promotion of employment in the country in January 2024, considering the economy as a whole, were: “Construction of buildings” (20 thousand vacancies), “Soybean cultivation” (8.6 thousand vacancies) and “ Cultivation of permanent crop fruits, except oranges and grapes” (7.3 thousand vacancies). Among MSEs, the highlight is “Construction of buildings” (15.8 thousand vacancies). As for the activities that added the most to the top 10 in MGE were: “Construction of buildings” (4.3 thousand vacancies) and “Cultivation of permanent crop fruits, except orange and grape” (4.3 thousand vacancies).
