Minister Silvio Almeida (Human Rights) travels to New York this Thursday (7) to promote Brazil’s candidacy for a seat on the UN Human Rights Council.
If elected, it would be the sixth time that the country would occupy a seat on the body. The application was launched in May. The campaign ends in October, when the election to choose new members takes place.
The Brazilian delegation will try to mobilize UN member countries in favor of the country’s candidacy. Bilateral meetings with Member States and a meeting with United Nations representatives are also planned.
Brazil’s intention, according to interlocutors from the Ministry of Human Rights, is to strengthen cooperation mechanisms within the context of the Human Rights Council, support social participation in the body’s decisions and encourage discussions in the field of combating hate speech and promoting racial equality, among other points.
