As the convictions of defendants accused of participating in the acts of January 8 in Brasília progress, a pattern is being established: the long duration of the sentences imposed by Minister Alexandre de Moraes. They have varied, with the exception of two cases, from 12 to 17 years of detention, initially in a closed regime.

Upon the first conviction, a sentence of 17 years in prison was established – a period longer than the sanctions established in the Brazilian legal system for crimes of rape, drug trafficking and corruption.

Who was convicted: Edvaldo Lopes dos Santos
When the penalty was published: October 2023

What was the crime: When a friend, Jaqueline Araújo da Silva, refused to give Edvaldo R$5 to buy drugs, an argument began. He pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim several times in the chest, who did not survive.

2. Femicide

Where it happened: Conceição do Araguaia (PA)
Who was convicted: José Edmar Rosa da Silva
When the penalty was published: November 2021
Length of sentence: 15 years and 9 months
What was the crime: Four months earlier, Rubervânia da Conceição França Silva ended her relationship with Silva. He started chasing her, until he stabbed her to death. He remained at large until 2015, when he was arrested and tried.

3. Concealment of a corpse

Where it happened: Itapoã (DF)
Who was convicted: Douglas de Jesus Alves
When the penalty was published: June 2023
Length of sentence: 15 years
What was the crime: Alves killed Thiago Pedro Monteiro de Brito with knife blows. He believed the victim had robbed his father. He placed the body inside a sofa, carried it to the street and set it on fire. He was charged with double homicide and concealment of a corpse.

4. Homicide due to drug trafficking

When the crime occurred: April 2011
Where it happened: Paranaguá (PR)
Who was convicted: José Roberto Domingues Júnior
When the penalty was published: December 2013
Length of sentence: 14 years
What was the crime: In the middle of the street, Júnior, who was a drug dealer with police records and was only 21 years old, stabbed to death a customer who owed him R$3,000. He worked as a drug leader in Morro da Cocada.

5. Crime Bureau Homicide

When the crime occurred: over the last five years
Where it happened: Rio de Janeiro – RJ)
Who was convicted: Leonardo Gouvêa da Silva (Mad) and Leandro Gouvêa da Silva (Blue Whale)
When the penalty was published: August 2023
Length of sentence: 13 years and 4 months
What was the crime: The two were members of the criminal faction Office of Crime and were convicted of leading the planning and execution of murders of at least three people involved in gambling in the capital of Rio.

6. Virtual rape of a vulnerable person

Where it happened: Campo Grande, MS)
Who was convicted: the action took place in secrecy
When the penalty was published: September 2023
Length of sentence: 13 years and 24 days
What was the crime: The criminal approached the victim, a 13-year-old teenager, through Facebook. He sent messages with photos of people having their throats cut and threatened to do the same to the victim if she didn’t send naked photos of herself – for a while, she accepted.

7. Rape of a vulnerable person

When the crime occurred: August 2018
Where it happened: São Sebastião da Boa Vista (PA)
Who was convicted: the case was carried out in secrecy
When the penalty was published: October 2019
Length of sentence: 17 years and six months
What was the crime: A 32-year-old man was accused of sexually abusing a 10-year-old girl with whom he was related. The child confirmed the rapes. He fled, but was later arrested, tried and convicted.
