The councilors of the municipality of Serra do Navio decided, unanimously, on Thursday (10), to remove Mayor Elson Belo (re-elected by Avante) for 180 days. He is accused of failing to submit accounts for the last three years. Elson, who is serving his second term, is also the target of several investigations by the Public Ministry of Amapá (MP-AP), including the disappearance of money – at least R$ 200,000 – from city hall accounts. Who took over the city hall was the deputy mayor Ana Paula Santos Sousa (PROS).

The removed mayor disappeared after he was informed of the councilors’ decision not to be notified, but on Friday afternoon (11) he had the city hall keys delivered and announced that he will appeal against the removal in court. The representation against Elson Belo was presented by Councilor Elizangela (Eli).

In addition to the accusation of not being accountable, Elson Belo is accused of paralyzed works, donation of real estate in Vila de Serra do Navio in exchange for political support and delay in payment of effective and temporary servants of the city hall. In addition, the mayor does not respond to requests from councilors and requests for information submitted by the Public Ministry through the prosecutor Fabiano Castanho, who investigates the disappearance of money from the municipality’s accounts.

In an impropriety action against the mayor, Elson Belo cites what he considers “a subversive record of the mayor ignoring requests for information made by the MP and the councilors”, demonstrating his malice in hindering access to information and official acts and delaying the actions of the bodies of control. For Castanho, Mayor Elson Belo’s intention is to hide what is being investigated. The chairman of the processing committee is Councilman Zander Guedes (PSD)
