Default Map

Only two states recorded a slight increase in defaults in the last month of the year, Ceará and Goiás

The year 2024 begins with good news for the country’s credit system: the number of consumers who are unable to pay their bills showed the second consecutive drop in the last month of last year. More than that, Serasa’s Default and Debt Renegotiation Map recorded in December the biggest reduction in three and a half years and the second biggest in five years: a bigger drop, only in June 2020, of 1.2 million people.

Even with the hopeful reduction, debt is still high in the country, with 71.1 million CPFs in this situation. According to Mapa, the total value of debts in December reached the sum of R$367 billion, which means an average debt of R$5,174.62 per person in debt – a reduction of 1.70% in relation to the November value (R$5,263.99).

State of Espírito Santo led the fall

Only Goiás and Ceará showed an increase in the number of defaulters, with growth of 1.94% and 1.25%, respectively. The remaining 25 states followed the downward trend that had already been highlighted in November. The biggest reductions in December were recorded in Rondônia (-2.82%), Mato Grosso (-3.71%) and Espírito Santo (-4.84%).

“The Desenrola program developed by the Federal Government and Serasa’s Feirões contributed decisively to these data for November and December”,

says Aline Maciel, manager of the Limpa Nome platform.

“Serasa alone recorded a total of 4.1 million debt agreements carried out over the last year, granting a total of R$11.7 billion in discounts to 2.5 million Brazilians”.

Age group and debt segment

Among age groups, the biggest defaulters in December were between 41 and 60 years old (35%), followed by the population aged 26 to 40 years old (34.2%) and people over 60 years old (18.7%). The reason for the majority of debts continues to be concentrated in four sectors: banks and cards (27.92%), basic water, electricity and gas bills (24.04%), finance (16.85%) and the retail sector (11.07%).
