Number of defaulters grows 3.6% in the first year of the Lula government 3

The number of defaulters increased by around 3.6% in the first year of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s (PT) third term. This was the variation in the number of people with outstanding debts between December 2022 and the last month of 2023.

According to data from the National Confederation of Store Managers (CNDL) and the Credit Protection Service (SPC Brasil), 66.12 million Brazilians were negative in December 2023. This is a significant number, despite the government having launched the renegotiation program of debts, the Unroll Brazilin July last year, when the country had more than 70 million in debt.

Among Brazilian adults, four in ten (40.35%) were negative at the end of the year. From November to December, the number of debtors fell -0.71%.

The largest number of debtors are in the age group of 30 to 39 years (23.65%). The estimate showed that around 16.38 million people are registered in the debtors registry in this age group, that is, almost half (48.08%) are negative.

  • 25 to 29 years old – 12.35%
  • 30 to 39 years old – 23.65%
  • 40 to 49 years old – 21%
  • 50 to 64 years old – 19.94%
  • 65 s 84 years – 11.51%
  • 85 or more – 1.88%

In relation to debtors by gender, participation remains well distributed and almost equal between men and women. However, 51.08% of those negative are women and 48.92% are men.

The indicator showed that the majority of debts are with banks, and each negative consumer owed, on average, R$4,337.70, in the sum of all debts.

  • R$500.01 to R$1,000 – 13.90%
  • R$1,001.01 to R$2,500 – 20%
  • R$2,500.01 to R$7,500 – 19.89%
  • Above R$7,500 – 15.24%

The number of outstanding debts in Brazil grew by 7.89% at the end of last year, compared to December 2022.

According to the indicator, there was also an increase in debts owed to the water and electricity sector with growth of 14.20%, followed by Banks (9.94%) and Commerce (0.88%).
