Sentenced to 400 years in prison, Sérgio Cabral will be honored by a samba school

Rio de Janeiro – RJ) – The Rio de Janeiro samba school União Cruzmaltina posted a video on its social networks announcing the launch of its samba plot for the 2024 carnival, which should honor the former governor of Rio de Janeiro Sérgio Cabral. The “teaser” refers to the management of the emedebista, between 2007 and 2014.

In June, the school’s Instagram page had already posted a photo of Cabral, stating that the former governor would be “besides a fantastic human being, one of the greatest politicians in the history of our country”. The school, linked to the Vasco da Gama crowd – the team for which the former governor supports -, is part of the Silver Series of the Carioca Carnival and will parade in Intendente Magalhães, in the north zone of Rio de Janeiro, where the parades of the divisions of access to Marquês de Sapucaí take place.

Cabral had his preventive detention decreed in 2016 in the context of Operation Lava Jato, on suspicion of having received bribes in the concession of public works in the state. He was sentenced to more than 400 years in prison in 23 cases that did not become final, passing through all instances of Justice. Without a final conviction, the former governor had his preventive measure revoked in December after six years in a closed regime and went under house arrest.

Last February, the Federal Court also revoked the last house arrest order against the former governor. From then on, he was allowed to leave the apartment in Copacabana, in the south zone of Rio, where he complied with the measure, but he needs to wear an electronic anklet. Cabral was the last politician arrested in Operation Lava Jato to leave the closed regime.
