The simple doubt about the possibility of reappointing Augusto Aras to the head of the Attorney General’s Office causes astonishment and raises controversy. More astonishing and controversial, however, is President Luiz Inácio da Silva not immediately discarding the hypothesis.
As improbable as his palatial surroundings say this is such a choice, Lula allows questions to prosper about how who manages a trial balloon. It does not impose a single comment on the praise given by important PT members to the prosecutor’s trajectory and conduct.
He states that he will talk “with everyone”, including Aras, to make a decision without haste or subjection to pressure, confirming that he will not take into account the triple list of the national association of prosecutors.
At first sight, this dubiousness sounds incoherent in view of the president’s declared willingness to dismantle his predecessor’s instruments. In it, Augusto Aras played a crucial role. He archived almost all cases that could cause problems for Jair Bolsonaro, as well as deputy Arthur Lira in his indifference to the mountain of impeachment requests submitted to the mayor.
A second look, however, signals the existence of meaning in the idea that Augusto Aras’ sensitivity to government interests regardless of the ideological field —as seen in the recent adaptation of the prosecutor’s procedures— would be a security factor for the Planalto.
If the mere possibility of reappointment on the one hand undermines coherence, on the other it follows the logic of the scalded cat that has guided the president’s conduct in the criteria for nominations to the Federal Supreme Court and in the opening of government ports to the ship from the center.
It is natural for Lula to reinforce his defenses, but it is not acceptable for him to consider doing so to the detriment of the role of the Public Ministry in defending society, whose interests are not always the same as those of the current government.
