A group of 12 senators has been waiting for a month for authorization from the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes to visit those arrested on suspicion of involvement in the acts of January 8th. The request, signed by senator Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE), was presented on December 6th. Two weeks later, the parliamentarian reinforced the request.

In the document, the senators argue that some of the detainees face comorbidities and need specific medical treatment. The group requested authorization to visit prisoners in the Papuda Penitentiary Complex and the Federal District Women’s Penitentiary.

“We inform you that we have heard worrying reports regarding the situation of the detainees, especially from Jaime Eduardo Naime, colonel of the PMDF, Silvinei Vasques, former director of the PRF, and Jorginho Cardoso de Azevedo, who have faced very serious health problems and psychological problems (severe depression, suicidal thoughts, etc.), which is why it is urgent to analyze their requests for provisional release, taking into account the risk to their physical and mental integrity, in addition to allowing visits”, argue the parliamentarians.

On December 18, Moraes granted provisional release to 46 accused of participating in the acts of January 8. They will continue to respond to processes and must comply with precautionary measures, such as the use of electronic ankle bracelets. According to the Court, 66 people are still detained on suspicion of participating in acts of vandalism.

The movement to release prisoners intensified after the death of Bahian businessman Cleriston Pereira da Cunha, aged 46, at the Papuda Penitentiary Complex, in Brasília. He had been in prison since January 8th and died after having a “sudden illness” while sunbathing on November 20th. Some of the names mentioned by the senators in the document sent to the Court on December 20th are already free.

Girão mentioned in the request that the report made after a visit by the Public Defender’s Office of the Federal District to the prison found the “absence of essential medication for maintaining health, problems with myocarditis, epilepsy, mental disability, suspected cancer, psychiatric problems, among others”. The senators also ask that prisoners’ requests for provisional release be analyzed as quickly as possible.

In addition to Girão, the following senators signed the request to visit prisoners: Magno Malta (PL-ES), Hamilton Mourão (Republicanos-RS), Eduardo Gomes (PL-TO), Ciro Nogueira (PP-PI), Izalci Lucas (PSDB -DF), Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO), Damares Alves (Republicanos-DF), Laércio Oliveira (PP-SE), Jorge Seif (PL-SC), Dr. Hiran (PP-RR) and Rogério Marinho (PL- RN).

A People’s Gazette asked the STF for a position on the senators’ request and, subsequently, forwarded the requests. In the first return to the report, the STF advisor informed that they had not located the request made by the senators. Subsequently, when more details were sent to the Court, there was no response to the newspaper until the article was published. The space remains open for demonstrations.
