The president of the CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) for NGOs, senator Plínio Valério (PSDB-AM), says there is no possible agreement to suspend the summons of the Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva, made by the collegiate.

The measure was taken on Tuesday (21), after the head of the department failed to respond to an invitation to a commission hearing. On the same date, Marina had already been summoned to a hearing at the Chamber’s Agriculture Committee to clarify government measures that would be harming the agricultural sector.

“I already expected her to find some excuse not to accept our invitation. These people already have their own agenda and don’t find time to go to the Senate”, says the president of the CPI of NGOs. “She gave her excuse, and the We did what we had to do: we called”, he adds.

With the invitation transformed into a summons, the minister will now be obliged to attend. The idea is that it will be heard next Monday (27), before heading to Dubai for COP28, the UN (United Nations) conference on climate.

The summoning of ministers by Congress tends to erode the relationship between parliamentarians and the federal government, given its imposing nature. Valério, however, denies any tension with the Lula government.

“It is a CPI of the Senate of the Federative Republic of Brazil, therefore, it deserves all the respect. And we have to make ourselves respected and become worthy of this mandate. If we are shy, full of fingers to summon this or that person, it is It’s better that we don’t install the CPI”, says the toucan.

“There’s nothing about retaliation, there’s nothing about being against the government. I said, from the beginning, that it’s not a question of Bolsonaro and Lula, right and left”, he continues. “We are not targeting the government, that is not the issue. Our issue is with the environmental NGOs. They need to be more transparent. How does the money come in? Who sent it, why did it send it, who received it, how was it used?”

For the president of the CPI, Marina should be heard for taking care of public policy for the environment in the country and for being the “executor” of a project that supposedly had NGOs as mentors. Valério also says he expects “explanations about the Amazon Fund” and about the minister’s relationship with organizations.

“The message we are sending to the Brazilian people is that they need to know the other side of these people’s narrative”, says Valério, critical of the activities of non-governmental organizations in the Amazon region.

“We need to show what really happens, for real, and not this fantasy, this thing they invent, this unreal world they live in. The environmentalist ‘ongueiros’ live in another world that is not ours. They ignore the being human, and we are not”, he concludes.
