CPI investigates the company’s responsibility in the environmental disaster that caused 20% of the city of Maceió to sink
Senators Omar Aziz (PSD-AM) and Jorge Kajuru (PSB-SP) were elected president and vice-presidency, respectively, of Braskem’s Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI), which aims to investigate the company’s responsibility in the environmental disaster which caused the sinking of 20% of the city of Maceió (AL). Omar must nominate the name for the CPI rapporteur when work begins in February 2024.
“I am very cautious about prejudging, we cannot prejudge anyone. Now rest assured that I will not preside over a ‘make-believe’ CPI, we will investigate thoroughly. Regardless of who the rapporteur is, the investigation will be in-depth so that we have a solution for the population of Maceió”,
Omar emphasized.
Present at the session that acclaimed Omar president of Braskem’s CPI, senator Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL) showed concern about the situation affecting the capital of the State he represents in the House. “The acclaim of the names of Senator Omar Aziz for president and Senator Jorge Kajuru for vice-president of this commission is the certainty that we will have an investigation no matter what, no matter who it hurts. The situation in Alagoas is absolutely regrettable. More than 200 thousand people, in one way or another, were removed by Braskem’s environmental crime, the largest urban environmental crime in the world”, highlighted Calheiros.
Senator Fabiano Contarato (PT-ES) also showed confidence in Omar’s leadership of the CPI’s work.
“I believe that Senator Omar has the serenity, the emotional balance, the sobriety to lead this CPI of such importance. I hope that this CPI determines criminal, civil and administrative responsibility. I hope that this commission will hold accountable anyone who in any way contributed to this crime against humanity and against the right to an ecologically balanced environment”,
reinforced Contarato.
Omar Aziz has already presided over the Pandemic CPI, one of the most important in history and which, at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, pressured the Federal Government to speed up the purchase of vaccines for the population, in addition to exposing a corruption scheme involving a overpriced negotiation of immunizers.
Braskem’s CPI aims to investigate the responsibility of the petrochemical company Braskem in the environmental crime related to the extraction of rock salt from the subsoil of Maceió, the capital of Alagoas. Recently, after the collapse of yet another mine, a team from the Federal Attorney General’s Office (AGU) began discussing with representatives of state powers and institutions in the State of Alagoas the reparation measures for society and the environment by the company Braskem , due to the sinking of the soil due to the exploitation of rock salt.
According to the AGU, in addition to the measures already adopted by the institutions involved, the Union will take the necessary measures to repair the damage caused to its property and will seek reimbursement for the amounts already spent in response to the tragedy.
