Senator files request for CPI to investigate domestic violence since 2019 – 12/22/2023 – Panel

Senator Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO) filed this Thursday (21) a request to open a CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) to investigate crimes of domestic and family violence against women since 2019, with an emphasis on the post-Covid pandemic. 19.

He gathered 31 signatures from male and female senators — at least 27 were needed.

In the request for the creation of the CPI, Kajuru asks that the collegiate have 11 members and 7 substitutes, a deadline of 180 days and an expense limit of R$ 150 thousand to “investigate crimes of domestic and family violence against women since 2019 to the present day “.

He proposes that the CPI have two rapporteurs, who would be senators Leila Barros (PDT-DF) and Damares Alves (Republicanos-DF).

In justification, the parliamentarian cites a report from the CNJ (National Council of Justice) on the application of the Maria da Penha Law in 2022, which indicates more than 600 thousand cases of domestic and family violence and/or femicide in the period from 2020 to 2022.

It also mentions the Brazilian Public Security Yearbook, which points to the reduction in funding for public policies and the impacts of the pandemic as reasons for the increase in violence against women.

In the text, the senator recalls the case of Sara Mariano, 35, a gospel singer who, according to the police, had her death planned by her husband, Ederlan Mariano.

In Kajuru’s assessment, the protection of women victims of domestic and family violence, despite being a duty of the State, “is not yet fully assured”.

“This Parliament cannot avoid discussing and confronting this sad scenario of violence against girls and women, nor can it neglect to investigate these very serious facts”, he writes.

“In view of this, we must investigate violence against women in Brazil, considering the intersection between gender and race, actions or omissions by public authorities, as well as possible responsibilities arising from the application of instruments established by law to protect women from this scenario of violence .”
