Senate: Bolsonaristas run out of space after supporting Marinho – 03/08/2023 – Politics

Defeated in the dispute between Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) and former Minister Rogério Marinho (PL-RN), the opposition parties ended up without any of the 14 Senate committees.

The installation took place this Wednesday (8), after an agreement between the parties that supported Pacheco or delivered the most votes: PSD, MDB, PT, União Brasil, PDT, PSB and Podemos.

Even with the second largest bench in the House, the PL, the party of former President Jair Bolsonaro and his eldest son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (RJ), did not win the presidency of any of the committees.

The same happened with the PP and the Republicans, parties that supported Marinho in the elections that took place on February 1st. Together, PL, PP and Republicans house eight former members of the Bolsonaro government, in addition to Flávio.

Senators from both government blocs claim that Marinho’s group carried out an unfair campaign against Pacheco and took the risk of being without the presidency of the permanent commissions when it carried out the candidacy.

During the dispute, allies of the former minister filled the senators’ e-mail box, called the offices, sent messages and commented on publications on the Internet associating Pacheco with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

Parliamentarians allied with Pacheco also say that a single commission in the hands of the opposition is capable of generating wear and tear for the government – ​​and that Lula’s ministers must already face obstacles in the Chamber of Deputies.

The subject of complaints from his colleagues, Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP), former president of the Senate, continued as chairman of the Constitution and Justice Committee —the most important in the Senate— for another two years.

Also former president of the Senate Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL) won the clash against the PT bench and was nominated for the presidency of the Foreign Affairs Committee – which was coveted by PT’s Humberto Costa (PT-PE).

The name of Vanderlan Cardoso (PSD-GO) was confirmed for the presidency of the Economic Affairs Commission, considered the second most relevant – one of the first acts of the commission should be to invite the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto.
