Over the past five years, books like “The People Against Democracy” by Yascha Mounk and “How Democracies Die” by Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt have inspired an endless number of debates and articles. In partnership with the team at the Sesc-SP Research and Training Center, historian Heloisa Starling proposes a discussion from an opposite angle: how is democracy reborn?
This is how the seminar that takes place on Tuesday (25) and Wednesday (26) at the Sesc Pompeia theater in São Paulo, with free admission, was named.
Names such as STF Minister Cármen Lúcia, the Secretary of Science and Technology of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Tatiana Roque, journalist and USP professor Eugênio Bucci and political scientist Miguel Lago will participate in the program.
“We tend to see democracy in Brazil as a weak thing, but when we look at history, we realize that this is not the case. It has a long history in the country. The modern idea of democracy began to be worked on here in the 18th century, in the conjuration of Rio de Janeiro. This notion of the fragility of democracy in Brazil started to bother me”, says Starling, a professor in the history department at UFMG.
Her reflection joined others to give rise to the seminar’s guiding thread. “In France, there is a pile of books on the history of democracy in the country. In the United States, too. Here, in Brazil, we don’t have any,” says the historian, responsible for curating the event at Sesc Pompeia.
“How are we going to think about democracy in these last four years? How are we going to rebuild it? In the midst of these thoughts, I remembered a 1985 book edited by Caio Graco [fora de catálogo]a book that popped into my head when I was in the student movement, titled ‘How Democracies Are Reborn,'” says Starling.
“We know how the democratic State dies, we know how to make this criticism, but how is it reborn?”
It is evident, she points out when citing the book, that the context was different. In the mid-1980s, when the work organized by Alain Rouquié, Bolívar Lamounier and Jorge Schvarzer came out, the country was experiencing the transition from the military dictatorship to the so-called New Republic. Today, he faces the hangover of the Bolsonaro years, a period marked by successive coup threats.
A theme generally limited to analyzes by political scientists, philosophers and historians, democracy opens up to new points of view at the Sesc event. An example is the inaugural table, on Tuesday, with two indigenous authors, Eliane Potiguara and Márcia Kambeba.
“If we are going to discuss how democracy is reborn, we need to create a public dialogue, with people from different areas”, says Starling. “That’s why the idea of debating the concept of democracy in indigenous communities. Democracy also has to be the other’s dream.”
With guests such as stylist Ronaldo Fraga, the table on culture and democratic imagination, on Wednesday, will cover topics such as fashion, music and literature.
Poetic performances close the two days of programming: on Tuesday, the stage will be occupied by the Pernambuco singers Luna Vitrolira and the Glosadoras do Sertão do Pajeú; in the fourth, by Ricardo Aleixo and his “pamphlet-poems”.
