Oppenheimer’s originality – 07/22/2023 – Elio Gaspari

Anyone who goes to the cinema to see the film “Oppenheimer” will meet a great character. The physicist directed the team of scientists and engineers who made the bombs at Alamogordo (the test), Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He was an unforgettable type for the eternal crumpled hat, the cigarette or the pipe, and the piercing blue eyes. Not to mention erudition, kindness, rigor and also cunning.
Who deciphered the character was physicist Robert Wilson, who, aged 29, worked with him at Los Alamos: “He was a bit eccentric, almost a professional eccentric”.
During his visit to Brazil, in 1953, a photographer portrayed him releasing a puff that looked like a mushroom from a nuclear explosion.
Having helped make the bombs, Oppenheimer became bored with smoke photography.

Seventy-eight years ago, US Secretary of War Henry Stimson received the list of targets: Hiroshima, Kokura or Niigata.
On Thursday the bomb will arrive at the Tinian base in the Pacific.
