Sweden and Spain face each other this Tuesday (15), at 5 am, for the semifinals of the Women’s World Cup, at Eden Park, New Zealand. The arbitration trio of the match will be Brazilian: Edina Alves as referee, Neuza Back as first assistant and Leila Cruz as second assistant. The fourth referee is Melissa Borjas, from Honduras.
This is not the first time that they act together in the current edition of the Worlds. Edina Alves is from Paraná, is 43 years old and belongs to the referees of Fifa, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), Conmebol and also the Paulista Football Federation (FPF). In 2021, she was the first female referee of a men’s football game in FIFA tournaments, in the duel between Al Duhail and Ulsan Hyundai for the Club World Cup.
It has refereed games at the 2019 Women’s World Cup, including the semi-final between England and the United States, as well as matches at the 2018 Copa America and two women’s soccer matches at the Tokyo Olympics.
The Paraná native was also the first woman in history to referee a Campeonato Paulista final, the first leg between Água Santa and Palmeiras this year at Arena Barueri, in addition to being the referee with the most games in Série A of the Brasileirão.
The semifinal will be Edina’s eighth game at Worlds. She refereed four duels in the 2019 Women’s Cup and this will be the fourth match in the current edition. The number will make her the Brazilian refereeing professional, between men and women, with the most World Cup matches — surpassing Carlos Eugênio Simon, who has 7 clashes, all in men’s editions.
Neuza Back
Currently on the FPF, CBF, Conmebol and Fifa referee boards, Neuza Back is from Santa Catarina and is 39 years old. The linesman was part, alongside Edina, of the first all-female arbitration in the history of the men’s Copa Libertadores, in the duel between Defensa y Justicia and Independiente del Valle, in 2021.
The first Brazilian to work in a men’s World Cup game, Neuza played in the Qatar World Cup in 2022, in addition to having refereed more than 100 games in the Brazilian Championship, the final of the Copa do Brasil, the FIFA Club World Cup, the Copa Sul- American, among others.
Also in 2022, he composed the first refereeing trio of women only in a men’s World Cup, in the duel between Germany and Costa Rica, for the group stage, alongside the French Stéphanie Frappart and the Mexican assistant Karen Diaz Medina.
Leila Cruz
Linked to the Football Federation of the Federal District, Leila Naiara Moreira Cruz was born in Luziânia, Goiás, is 35 years old and has been part of the FIFA referees since 2019.
Graduated in Physical Education, she also works as a personal trainer and will work in a Women’s World Cup for the first time. She joined the CBF board in 2015 and was the first DF referee to join the Fifa board.
