The Federal Police operation carried out last Thursday (8) against Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and his allies increases the pressure around the former president.

If prosecuted and convicted of the crimes of attempted coup d’état, attempted abolition of the democratic rule of law and criminal association, the former president could face a sentence of up to 23 years in prison and be ineligible for more than 30 years.

Bolsonaro has not yet been indicted for these crimes, but suspicions about these crimes led the Federal Police to launch the operation called Tempus Veritatis (which, in Latin, means Time of Truth).

The former president has already been convicted by the TSE for attacks and lies about the electoral system and is the target of different other investigations at the STF (Supreme Federal Court). At this moment, he, who is 68 years old, is ineligible until at least 2030.

In a video in which he calls on supporters for a demonstration on February 25th, on Avenida Paulista, Bolsonaro says he will be present to defend himself against all the accusations made against him in recent months.

See what the former president and his children have already said about the PF operation:

‘I didn’t even know this recording existed’

In an interview with Record, broadcast last Friday (9), Jair Bolsonaro spoke about the video held by the PF of a ministerial meeting held on July 5, 2022, three months before the elections, an occasion in which he and his assistants discussed clearly coup scenarios.

According to him, “her disclosure [reunião] I don’t see anything much.” “There are very important sections there that I’m going to cut out and publicize. I didn’t even know this recording existed. If someone had asked to record, I would have authorized it.”

‘There was nothing like that’

In the same interview with Record, the former president responds to the accusations that he participated in an attempted coup d’état.

“This term coup d’état, abolition of the democratic rule of law, is not even wrong, it is a crime to say that. The people of January 8th, in my opinion, were led into a trap by the left, but what happened was riot. No one tried violently, using weapons, as they are being sentenced to 17 years in prison because of this, to change the democratic rule of law”, he said.

“When you talk about a coup d’état, it’s usually something planned quietly. You have to have military force, you have to have a weapon and there was none of that.”

According to him, there was never a coup attempt in his government. “I discussed everything with my ministers just to be safe.”

Bolsonaro also said that he knew he would be persecuted, but not that much.

‘I had no participation whatsoever’

The former president told Record that he had no participation in alleged campaign monitoring by Abin (Brazilian Intelligence Agency) and attributed decisions regarding intelligence work to General Augusto Heleno, then minister of the Institutional Security Office.

“At a given moment [de reunião ministerial de 2022], Heleno said he was going to follow both sides, find out about both sides. It’s the work of his intelligence, in which I had no participation whatsoever,” he said.

“I rarely used the intelligence we have, from the Armed Forces, Abin itself, the Federal Police. I don’t see anything wrong with that. Heleno wanted to expand on the subject, I said it wasn’t the case to go into details. You’re going to carry out an operation, do it. Abin has the power to carry out operations and even preserve people”, he continued.

‘Process piece’

On social media, the former representative wrote, on the 9th, that the “draft” of the state of siege found by the PF at the PL headquarters, “was nothing more than a piece of process provided by the minister in charge of the investigation.”

The draft found by the PF on the 8th in Bolsonaro’s room at the party headquarters in Brasília provided for a declaration of a state of siege and the decree of a GLO (Guarantee of Law and Order) operation after the defeat in the elections.

Also on social media, senator Flávio Bolsonaro stated that “the same draft of Cid’s ‘coup’ (which was never considered) was found at the PL headquarters because @jairbolsonaro asked them to print it so he could be aware of what it was about, since who had never seen her. The end. The mountain gave birth to another mouse…”

‘Prayer for Brazil’

On Saturday (10), the former president published a video on his social network in which he participates in a prayer circle in Angra dos Reis (RJ), days after the PF operation against him and his allies and amid the progress of the investigations.

The video was recorded in what he called “the Mambucaba fence” — the former president made a habit of receiving supporters at his beach residence.

“A prayer for Brazil – God, Country, Family and Freedom”, he wrote in the post. Bolsonaro doesn’t say anything in the video, he just appears with his back listening to a supporter’s prayer.

‘Such a meeting’

Representative Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), son of the former president, used Instagram on Sunday (11) to talk about the meeting. He shared a 35-second snippet of the video, which is about an hour and a half long.

“The excerpt from that ‘secret’ meeting that they don’t want you to watch. Just 35 seconds. What kind of scam is this, my God in heaven?.”

‘We will continue to resist’

After the arrest of the national president of the PL, Valdemar Costa Neto, for illegal possession of a firearm on the 8th, Eduardo used social media to comment on the matter.

“My solidarity with the President of the PL, @CostaNetoPL. The treatment of those who try to oppose democratically in Brazil is worse than that given to a drug dealer. We will continue to resist.”

PL is the party of former president Bolsonaro. The weapon was located by the Federal Police during the search and seizure as part of the operation investigating the attempted coup. The measures took place at his personal address and also at the PL headquarters. The PF also found a gold nugget in Valdemar’s possession.

‘Smoke screens’

On February 2, Bolsonaro wrote on love doesn’t do it?!”

The comment came a few days after the Federal Police carried out search and seizure warrants on January 29th to advance the investigation into the activities of the so-called “Abin Paralela”.

One of the targets was Carlos Bolsonaro (Republicanos-RJ), Rio de Janeiro councilor and son of the former president. In the new action, the PF targets people who were recipients of information produced illegally by the federal government’s intelligence agency.

The councilor wrote on February 6 that “in the absence of ideas, achievements and direction for Brazil, only narratives are left to create smokescreens diverting the focus from what really interests the nation, so every day they target Jair Bolsonaro. See you later innocent of the innocent realizes.”

‘Fishing in a pool’

The former president told the Mônica Bergamo column that the intention of the search and seizure operation launched on January 29th by the PF at his house in Angra dos Reis was to “make fun” of him and his family.

The PF targeted his son Carlos.

“They want to mock me, make me feel embarrassed,” he said.

Bolsonaro states that the intention was to find something that would involve him in a crime, but that this would not happen, as he would not be involved with the parallel Abin mentioned in the investigation.

“They’re throwing nets, fishing in the pool. There are no fish.”
