This Wednesday (4), during the signing of the Integrated Actions Protocol (PAI) on the performance of district security forces and the federal government, in Brasília, the interim Minister of Justice and Public Security, Ricardo Cappelli, and the Acting governor of the Federal District (DF), Celina Leão (PP), informed that the security plan drawn up for January 8, 2024 foresees reinforcement of the Military Police (PM), isolation of the Esplanade and the use of Force National.

According to Cappelli, 250 men from the National Force will provide security for the Palace of Justice and will be on standby for “any possible need”.

“All forces will be mobilized to ensure it is a historic day of democratic celebration. So far, there is nothing that causes greater concern […] There is no chance of repeating what happened on January 8, 2023 on January 8, 2024,” said Cappelli.

The minister also praised the performance of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and the Federal Police Operation (PF) that has targeted alleged executors and financiers of acts considered “anti-democratic”. According to Cappelli, Operation Lesa Pátria has no end date.

“The STF’s stance established a clear limit that cannot be exceeded. Democratic demonstration is welcome. Now, attacking institutions and attacking the lives of people and authorities is unacceptable”, said Capelli when referring to the recent statement by STF minister, Alexandre de Moraes, about an alleged plan by 8/1 protesters to hang him.

According to the governor of the DF, Celina Leão, the PMDF will work together with the other forces and will make around 2 thousand men available to reinforce security.

“The information has been shared for more than a month by all security forces. So, there is already integration with the activities of the Public Security secretariats, with the Federal Police… There is prior monitoring by all local forces and the governor himself and the acting governor here in the Federal District”, he stated.

The plan foresees the blocking of Avenida José Sarney, one before Avenida das Bandeiras, in front of the National Congress, until the end of Praça dos Três Poderes, and the inspection of vehicles and people traveling in the surrounding area.

The idea is to isolate the buildings of Congress, the Federal Supreme Court, the Planalto Palace, the Ministry of Justice and Itamaraty.

At the ceremony, Cappelli also officially delivered 20 vehicles, weapons, drones, cartridges and other equipment to reinforce public security in the Federal District, within the scope of the Security Action Plan (PAS) and Pronasci, totaling R$ 3, 6 million, according to the federal government.

When speaking at the event, the minister also once again defended the mandatory use of body cameras by police officers in all states to, according to him, facilitate the fight against organized crime. Cappelli said the government will present guidelines for using the cameras in February and expects cooperation from all states.
