Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos-SP) is already certain to leave for 2024: Sonaira Fernandes (Republicanos), secretary of Women’s Policies, will try to return to being a councilor in the capital.

At the top level of state management, the assessment is that she has not yet shown what she came for. Sonaira is part of the political group of federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), with whom she worked and who has already campaigned for her

Evangelical, Sonaira became known for her anti-feminist and anti-abortion activism. In May, the state government spent R$135,900 for her to travel to Switzerland to participate in the event “Uniting our Nations and Reconciling”, which proposed “teaching biblical principles in government spheres around the world”.

As councilor of the capital from 2020 to 2022, Sonaira presented projects to prohibit racial quotas in public and private institutions in the city of São Paulo and for biological sex to be the only criterion for the participation of athletes in competitions in São Paulo, thus excluding transgender people in sports disputes.

Her other projects included banning the creation of unisex bathrooms in the city, the use of neutral language and teaching about “gender ideology” and sexual orientation in schools. None of them were approved.
