Former governor of São Paulo, Rodrigo Garcia (PSDB) ended his sabbatical period and resumed political activity once and for all.

The presence of the toucan on the stage of Aldo Rebelo’s inauguration ceremony as secretary of the Ricardo Nunes (MDB) administration, on Monday (19), caught the attention of those present, given that Garcia had been keeping his distance from public events.

After the defeat in the race for governor of São Paulo in 2022, Garcia spent a year in the United States, staying away from politics. When he returned to Brazil, he remained a recluse, focused on his law firm in the area of tax law.

The setback in the first round was shocking: his party, the PSDB, left command of the state after 28 years.

This Monday (26), Garcia is expected to meet with Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos-SP), his successor in the state administration. The meeting was a suggestion by André do Prado (PL-SP), president of the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo, with whom the toucan met recently.

The former governor has also participated in discussions in his party, the PSDB. In the dispute for the presidency of the state directory, he has helped Marco Vinholi to resume his position.

By speaking out in favor of Vinholi, Garcia tries to establish an ally in a position of influence. Furthermore, it prevents Duarte Nogueira, mayor of Ribeirão Preto, and Paulo Serra, from Santo André, from occupying the space.

Nogueira and Serra appear as two possible interested parties in running for governor of São Paulo in 2026, which is also on Garcia’s horizon, according to his allies.
