Deputies produced laws that benefit the population in several areas, one of which is consumer rights
Manaus (AM) – The year 2023 marked the first year of operation of the 20th Legislature of the Amazonas Legislative Assembly (Aleam) and the deputies committed themselves to producing laws that benefit the population in several areas, one of them being consumer rights.
Aiming to protect the consumer, the most vulnerable part of the consumer relationship, Law No. 6,399/2023 establishes the State Consumer Rights Awareness Week, to be held annually in the second week of March, the period in which National Day is celebrated of the Consumer. The law was authored by deputies Mário César Filho (UB), Dr. George Lins (UB), Joana Darc (UB) and Wanderley Monteiro (Avante).
“Although the Consumer Protection and Defense Code has been in force for more than 30 years, there are still a large number of people who are unaware of their rights”,
explains deputy Mário César, president of the Aleam Consumer Protection Committee.
The parliamentarian is also the author of Bill (PL) No. 876/2023, which has already been approved and is only awaiting government sanction. The proposal guarantees consumers the right to cancel an online service subscription at any time, without the need for justification and without financial penalties.
Another matter already approved by the Legislative House and just awaiting sanction, is PL nº 522/2023, authored by President Roberto Cidade (UB), which prohibits telemarketing actions via telephone calls made by bots, robots or any software program that executes automated, repetitive and pre-defined tasks await government sanction.
“The prohibition of these practices will contribute to consumer protection and increase trust in consumer relationships. The objective of our law is to strengthen existing determinations”, stated the president.
ATMs
Law No. 6,665/2023, authored by deputies Thiago Abrahim (UB) and Joana Darc, requires the financial institution that provides an ATM in its bank branch for self-service to consumers of its products and services, to display, ostensibly, information for the fraud prevention in the space where it is installed.
“It is a well-known fact that literate citizens, but little familiar with electronic equipment, especially the majority of elderly people, are victims targeted by fraudsters, swindlers and/or scammers when they manipulate ATMs for self-service in bank branches”, points out deputy Abrahim , stating that because they don’t know how to operate the machine properly, despite its intuitive resources, they end up becoming easy victims for criminals.
