Right-wing politicians compare Bolsonaro with Venezuelan opponent

Right-wing parliamentarians compared the decision of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) against former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) with the situation of former Venezuelan deputy María Corina Machado, opponent of dictator Nicolás Maduro. The Electoral Court made this Friday (30) the former Brazilian president ineligible for eight years.

Most ministers considered that Bolsonaro committed abuse of political power and misuse of the media by questioning the security of the Brazilian electoral system in a meeting with ambassadors in July last year.

Also this Friday it was announced that María Corina Machado, one of the favorites in the opposition primaries for the 2024 presidential elections, is disabled from running for elected office for 15 years. The Comptroller General of Venezuela, an organ of the Chavista dictatorship, confirmed the information and argued that the former deputy was part of a “corruption plot orchestrated” by opposition leader Juan Guaidó.

In the social media, federal deputy Carla Zambelli (PL-SP) shared a post about the decision against the Venezuelan. “Any resemblance is purely coincidental,” said Zambelli. Deputy Filipe Barros (PL-PR) pointed out “like there, like here”. Former federal deputy Deltan Dallagnol (Podemos-PR), impeached by TSE decision, also shared a report on the Venezuelan situation.

Also federal deputy Marco Feliciano (PL-SP) compared the Venezuelan dictatorship with Brazilian democracy. “Venezuela’s DICTATORSHIP makes opposition leader María Corina ineligible for 15 years; Brazil’s “DEMOCRACY” makes opposition leader Jair Bolsonaro ineligible for 8 years; Coincidence?”, questioned Feliciano.

The former Venezuelan deputy denied the accusations and said she intends to continue running in the Venezuelan opposition primaries, which will be held in October. Bolsonaro has already announced that he will appeal the decision of the TSE to the Federal Supreme Court (STF). The former president said that the judgment “has no foundation and no head” and that the TSE has no legal basis to make it ineligible.
