Former deputy defends homage to Colonel Erasmo Dias – 06/30/2023 – Panel

Former deputy Frederico D’Ávila (PL-SP), author of the bill in honor of Erasmo Dias that was enacted by Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), maintains the opinion that the colonel, exponent of the military dictatorship, deserves naming a junction in Paraguaçu Paulista, the city where he was born.

In an interview with the Panel, he states that he already expected criticism from representatives of left-wing parties and human rights movements to the project and says that in the episode of the invasion of PUC in São Paulo, in 1977, the best known of the military’s career, Erasmo Dias “didn’t make a mistake”.

“The invasion of PUC has a very complex history. They turned the academic directory into a movement apparatus. They were using academic structure to carry out party-political agitation. Something that we see today in universities. Those who are complaining today, that was already expected. More than 40 years have passed and they still think they were right”, says D´Ávila. “That was real madness. Nobody there was interested in democracy, but in dictatorship of the proletariat, class struggle”.

Dias was a federal deputy between 1979 and 1983 and a state deputy between 1987 and 1999. He died in 2010 at the age of 85. The invasion of PUC resulted in the arrest of 854 people.

The author of the project claims that he did not talk to Tarcísio about the tribute and that he considers that the enactment was already expected, as governors do not usually oppose initiatives of the type originating from the Legislature.

The former parliamentarian, leader of agribusiness, defends that Erasmo Dias fulfilled his role well in the reduction of crime rates in São Paulo and had 20 years of parliamentary activity, elected by vote, and for that he deserves to be recognized.

“They name a terrorist, a president who deserted the country, a foreign dictator [para vias públicas]. There is a famous avenue in São Paulo called Marechal Tito. Ask what Marshal Tito was doing in Yugoslavia. They changed the name of the Costa e Silva highway to João Goulart. It’s what they do. They rewrite history. It’s the famous Stalinist policy,” he says.

D’Ávila ironizes the terms used by the PUC-SP community in a letter against the law. “They say in the letter ‘I demand it’. That’s the best way for you not to get something from Tarcísio. That’s when he won’t listen anyway”.
