After eight months of noise, dust and changes in traffic, Alameda Prudente de Moraes, in the central region of Curitiba, has been properly renovated. With investments of R$3.3 million, the requalification works that covered three blocks of Prudente were delivered by Mayor Rafael Greca last Tuesday (31).

The action is part of the Rosto da Cidade and Caminhar Melhor projects, run by the city of Curitiba, which is gradually revitalizing streets and areas in the central zone with wider sidewalks, special lighting, new paving and even special treatment on the facades of some buildings. The objective is to take Curitiba residents to the city center and breathe new life into the region, which is still suffering from the impact of post-covid social and economic changes.

After the interventions, the Prudente de Moraes Gastronomic Center, which covers the three blocks between Alameda Dr. Carlos de Carvalho and Rua Professor Fernando Moreira, now has new sidewalks with full accessibility (with lowered curbs), lanes in smooth concrete and granite slate. The space was expanded to accommodate tables in bars and restaurants and specific lighting posts for pedestrians were installed, as well as road lamps.

In the section, which totals 2,300 m² of sidewalk and 420 meters of pavement, the road was revitalized by reusing original cobblestones, to preserve the street’s historical identity and reduce traffic speed. New urban furniture, landscaping, guardrails and bollards were also included.

The requalification of Rua Prudente de Moraes is part of a set of initiatives by the city of Curitiba to prioritize pedestrians and promote sustainable mobility throughout the city. At the moment, thirteen blocks around the Municipal Market are undergoing renovation, which has entered the final stretch and should be completed in January 2024, with the creation of a boulevard for pedestrians and non-motorized travel between Sete de Setembro and Afonso Camargo avenues.

Soon, Saldanha Marinho street will also undergo similar improvements. The executive project is ready and will soon open for the bidding phase. The expectation, according to Ippuc’s project director, architect Célia Bin, is that the first stage of work will begin by the beginning of 2024. The revitalization of Saldanha Marinho will be divided into two stages. The first of them will go from Curitiba Cathedral to Rua Fernando Moreira. The second phase will go up to Praça da Espanha.
