Senator Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL) proposed an agreement in the Federal District Court in which he undertakes to pay in 12 installments the amount of R$ 95,500, a debt arising from a sentence imposed on him for moral damages in a case brought by Mário Covas Neto, known as Zuzinha and son of the former governor of São Paulo Mário Covas (PSDB).

The lawyers representing Renan claimed that the parliamentarian “does not have all the financial resources to immediately pay off the debt” and, therefore, the installment payment “is necessary”.

They also highlighted “the intention of the executed [Renan]” in closing the matter “in a pecuniary way, without its assets being seized, which demonstrates good faith and procedural loyalty, and can never lead to the understanding of an act that violates the dignity of Justice”.

The reporter contacted the parliamentarian’s press office and there was no response. Lawyer Luís Henrique Machado, who represents the man from Alagoas, stated that, as the case is still ongoing, the defense will only make a decision after the final decision has been made.

In 1999, upon returning to the Senate after commanding the Ministry of Justice under the Fernando Henrique Cardoso (PSDB) administration, Renan and the then governor of the capital of São Paulo exchanged accusations regarding the vehicle inspection service. The parliamentarian accused Covas, a defender of transferring inspection to the states, of wanting to favor certain companies.

Covas countered and called Renan a “kid”, a “minor figure” and insinuated that the senator is a “thief”: “Put the two of us in a room with a thousand people and ask which of the two is the thief to see how they respond. “, according to the news Sheet at the time.

At the time, when interviewed by the newspaper about the statements made by Covas, Renan responded: “It is demonstrated that he [Covas] He really doesn’t understand kids. Pivete is this Zuzinha, a kind of acid rain that has caused the moral corrosion of Covas”.

The request for reparation presented to the Court by Covas Neto was judged valid in March 2001, and Renan was ordered to pay the amount of R$ 30 thousand — R$ 95,662.68, in current values.
