Renan says he will convince Lula of CPI against coup plotters – 02/02/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

Senator Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL) says he will seek President Lula (PT) to convince him of the need for a CPI to investigate the acts of January 8, in which protesters invaded and destroyed areas of the Planalto Palace, the National Congress and the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

Re-elected on Wednesday (1st) to preside over the Senate for another two years, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) has already signaled that he will install the CPI. But Lula spoke out against it, saying that it could create “tremendous confusion”.

Renan disagrees, and says that he will seek to convince Lula so that the PT supporter of the commission’s work.
The senator says that the installation of the CPI is a priority.

He claims that it is necessary to delve deeper into the facts, even though they involve high-ranking military and former military personnel who allegedly collaborated with the coup plotters.

“There is a lot of fear in certain sectors of investigating the military. But peaceful coexistence with coup leaders is a mistake. If we do not definitively defeat these coup attempts, we will be exposed to these tensions at all times”, says the senator.

Early this Thursday (2), Senator Marcos do Val (Podemos-ES) said that Jair Bolsonaro (PL), at the end of his term as President of the Republic, tried to coerce him to participate in a coup.

The senator said in an interview with GloboNews that Bolsonaro and former federal deputy Daniel Silveira tried to convince him to record a conversation with STF minister Alexandre de Moraes to try to compromise the magistrate and spoil the elections, which gave victory to Lula.

Do Val’s statements could boost the CPI.

“The Executive, through the Federal Police, is already investigating terrorist acts. The Judiciary as well. Congress cannot omit itself, it has to do its part”, says Renan Calheiros.

“We need permanent vigilance against coup plotters. And at the CPI it is possible to have an audience and popular vigilance”, he says.

“The 8th of January is not over yet. It is necessary to investigate and punish him so that he is definitely buried”, the senator also affirms.

He also claims that Lula needs to understand that the CPI will be installed anyway — either on the initiative of parliamentarians who support his government, or on the initiative of the opposition, which would then try to direct investigations against alleged mistakes by the PT government in handling the crisis.
