First lady Rosângela da Silva, known as Janja, publicly mourned the death of journalist Glória Maria, which took place this Thursday (2).

“Glória Maria broke paradigms and paved the way for all women in journalism. She will forever be an example of talent and courage”, wrote the wife of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) on the networks.

Earlier, the representative published a message in which he said he received the news of the journalist’s death with great sadness. “Glória was a reporter at important moments in Brazil and the world, she interviewed big names and left her mark in the memory of Brazilian men and women”, wrote Lula.

“She was the first reporter to make a live entry on Jornal Nacional and became eternal on the Fantástico and Globo Repórter programs. My hug and solidarity with her family, friends, colleagues and admirers of her career”, said the PT candidate.

Glória died this Thursday morning, aged 73, journalist Glória Maria, victim of cancer. The information was confirmed by TV Globo in a note sent to the press.

According to the broadcaster, the treatment Gloria was taking to fight the metastases that existed in her brain stopped taking effect in recent days.

After overcoming a brain tumor in 2019, Glória Maria faced cancer again at the end of last year. In December, Globo reported that she was away from TV to deal with her health, but claimed that this was part of the treatment for the brain tumor.

The age assigned to her was 73 years old, but Glória never confirmed it. In an interview with Mano Brown on the Mano a Mano podcast, she said that she liked to dribble people’s curiosity. “There’s no data to prove it and I’ll make it up. Back there, no one will be able to get it right because I got it so confused that no one will be able to do the math. And it’s not to hide it. It’s a matter of family culture.”

In an interview with the column in 2018, she revealed that racism led her to be one of the last reporters of her generation to face TV. “I was the last one to go on air, because of me. I had to do work with a psychologist and voice because I was afraid of people’s reactions”, she said, at the time. “There’s only white people on television, so will I appear?”

Looking back, however, the journalist said she sees racism more strengthened today. “Before, it was you with your voice and your racist feelings. Today, you can amplify that voice. There’s the internet, social networks, information that comes from the other side of the world.”
