Regional “pro-democracy” acts on the left have low support

This Monday (8), in response to the call of President Lula (PT), social movements organized regional “pro-democracy” acts in reference to the one year anniversary of the acts of January 8, 2023.

According to information published in profiles of government base parties and social movements, demonstrations were organized in at least 14 cities.

According to the Central de Movimentos Populares (CMP), acts “in defense of democracy” were carried out in the following capitals: São Paulo (SP), Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Belo Horizonte (MG), Porto Alegre (RS), Goiânia ( GO), Campina Grande (PB), João Pessoa (PB), Aracaju (SE), Fortaleza (CE), Recife (PE), Curitiba (PR), Campo Grande (MS) and Salvador (BA), in addition to demonstrations in city ​​of Botucatu, in São Paulo.

As an example of what happened at the ceremony held with representatives of the Three Powers, in Brasília, in the middle of the afternoon, the regional acts were marked by posters calling for ex-president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to be blamed for the acts of 8/1, as well as the criminalization of the right, in addition to shouts repeating the motto sung by the left over the last year: “No amnesty”.

Despite all the propaganda from the federal government surrounding the ceremony and the insistence on the “coup” narrative, the regional acts had little support and were little publicized in the profiles of left-wing parliamentarians.

On Sunday (7), the Central Única dos Trabalhadores (CUT) and left-wing parties, such as PCdoB, PDT, PSB, PSOL, PT, PV and Rede, held the “Act in Defense of Democracy – No Amnesty for Coupists” in a section of the Eixo Rodoviário Norte, in Brasília.

In addition to calling for the punishment of all those involved in the acts of 8/1, the activists also protested against the Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) No. 32/2020, which proposes changes to public service rules, including restrictions on employment stability.

In Sao Paulo, The militants currently occupy an area on Avenida Paulista, in front of the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP).

A similar group met at Cinelândia, in Rio de Janeiro, to claim the same agenda.

In Recife, a small group of militants gathered around the Tortura Nunca Mais monument, which is located in the Boa Vista neighborhood, close to the center of the capitall. The act was attended by members of the Court of Justice of Pernambuco (TJPE) and the Public Ministry of Pernambuco (MPPE).

In João Pessoa, the militants gathered in the center of the capital and, in addition to the traditional flags of left-wing parties, they displayed Palestinian flags.

In Porto Alegre, federal deputy Maria do Rosário (PT-RS) participated in the events and said that Monday’s demonstrations “reject the coup”. The parliamentarian also defended “freedom” and reiterated the request for “no amnesty” to those accused of “anti-democratic acts” on January 8, 2023.

In the early afternoon, a “pro-democracy” act was also recorded in the center of Curitiba (PR).

“We are on the streets to say coup never again, dictatorship never again, human rights always, democracy always, freedom of expression and a better life for the Brazilian people”, said Marlei Fernandes, teacher and leader of the National Confederation of Education Workers (CNTE) and APP-Sindicato.
