A rare spotless giraffe was born at Brights Zoo in the US city of Limestone, Tennessee.

The female is brown in color. The birth of giraffes with this characteristic is considered rare.

The birth on July 31 drew the attention of publications in several countries and on social networks.

Luan Henrique Morais, biologist and master in fauna conservation, from the São Paulo Zoo, the rare appearance is the result of a genetic alteration.

“Cases like this, in giraffes, are very rare. When the animal is born with a problem, without spots, like the white tiger, which is the same species as the orange tiger, or the black jaguar, which is the same species as the jaguar, that these are alterations in the genes of the animals that lead to this change in the color pattern”, he explains.

According to the biologist, the patterns of the animals have a function.

“Each giraffe has a pattern of spots that we can differentiate one animal from the other, as well as zebras, tigers. They also have a protection function. The spots help the animal to hide in the forest, in the habitat where they live. In the case of a zebra, for example, it helps to confuse the vision of lions”, he says.

The zoo opened an internet poll to choose the name of the giraffe. There are four options with their respective meanings:

  1. Kipekee – Single
  2. Firyali – Unusual or Extraordinary
  3. Shakiri – She is the most beautiful
  4. Jamella – A great beauty

The voting, which has received participation from people from all over the world, continues until the 4th of September, when the votes will be counted and the name will be announced.

The zoo took advantage of the huge attention generated by the animal’s birth to ask people to get involved in giraffe conservation activities.

“If you would like to get involved in helping giraffes in the wild, visit Save Giraffes Now, the more of us supporting these organizations working in the wild the better. We want to ensure that future generations have the opportunity to see these wonderful animals in the future”, publicized the zoo on social media.
