Queiroga will launch a book on Health in the pandemic – 07/21/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

Former Minister of Health Marcelo Queiroga will receive guests at the launch of his autobiography “Queiroga: The Man, the Doctor and the Pandemia – Overcoming the Emergency in Public Health”, which will be held at the headquarters of the Associação Paulista de Medicina (APB), in the capital of São Paulo, on the 27th.

Queiroga took over the portfolio in March 2021, during the government of then-President Jair Bolsonaro (PL). The cardiologist was the fourth to hold the position in 12 months of the Covid-19 pandemic. Before him, the military Eduardo Pazuello, now a federal deputy for the Rio de Janeiro PL, and doctors Luiz Henrique Mandetta and Nelson Teich headed the portfolio.

The book narrates Queiroga’s trajectory, ranging from his training and specialization in cardiology to his appointment to the ministry. The preface was written by Bolsonaro.

The former president has always been a critic of the measures advocated by the World Health Organization, alleging more serious harm such as the paralysis of the economy, and has stimulated denialist speeches and practices for several months, including the use of proven ineffective drugs against the disease.

When Queiroga announced the end of the Covid health emergency in Brazil, in April 2022, he made no mention of these Bolsonaro points, but highlighted the government’s defense of the autonomy of doctors, even those who followed the so-called “early treatment”, based on the use of drugs without proven efficacy against Covid —such as hydroxychloroquine, for example.

“I thank the doctors who, with the autonomy defended by the federal government, used the best of science in favor of patients, as well as all the health professionals who tirelessly fought against this disease”, stated Queiroga in his speech at the time.
