PVC: Sampaoli is a tactical genius, not always a winner – 04/23/2023 – PVC

Last week’s tactical scene in Brazil was Jorge Sampaoli’s speech on the pitch at Ninho do Urubu, guiding the Flamengo squad: “Respect for the ball is always. All the time. A lost ball is like a problem. Don’t worry. you can never lose the ball.”

Makes you think. Sampaoli is a tactical genius, not always a trophy winner. In Brazil, he was only champion of Minas Gerais, national titles he has not had since the Universidad de Chile in 2012. He won the Copa América for Chile, in 2015.

The obvious question is why Brazil has lost its taste for the ball. An in-depth study indicates that teams here have always taken pleasure in attacking, not necessarily in possession.

The least loved team that won the World Cup in 1994 was a master of ball possession. Parreira was disgusted by the pressure on the attacking field and this is what differentiates his style from the more modern game of Sampaoli.

You could call the heck game boring, not retractable. He insisted on the ball, even more than Zagallo, in 1970, or Felipão, in 2002.

Without being obsessed with the ball, Abel made his team have 61% of the time exchanging passes and took 2 x 0. He increased to 68% and tied the match.

Abel is different from Sampaoli. He thinks that against stronger opponents it is important to have different strategies. The last two Brazilian champions, Abel for Palmeiras and Cuca for Atlético, acted more in this way than Sampaoli and Fernando Diniz.

No one wins a national title in April in this southern hemisphere. Right now, it’s really good to see Fluminense.
