PT resolution sends a veiled message against Cristiano Zanin – 08/30/2023 – Panel

Resolution of the PT national directory released this Wednesday (30) sends a veiled message to STF minister Cristiano Zanin, who has been giving conservative decisions.

An excerpt from the text, proposed by the president of the party, Gleisi Hoffmann, makes a laudatory reference to a series of recent decisions taken by the court, but which were opposed by the former lawyer of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

“At a time when the Federal Supreme Court is due to resume the judgment of the time frame, we express the expectation that the Supreme Court reaffirms the rights of indigenous peoples, as occurred in previous decisions. This expectation of action in defense of civilization is reinforced by recent decisions and advances of the STF in this sense”, says the resolution.

The party then cites the equating of the offense against LGBTQIA+ people with the crime of racial injury, the opening of action on violence against Guarani-Kaiowa indigenous peoples by the Military Police of Mato Grosso do Sul; maintenance of the principle of insignificance and progress in the decriminalization of marijuana possession for personal use.

The idea, according to the Panel, was to express “discomfort” with Zanin. Gleisi’s proposal faced internal resistance, however.

Some party leaders argued that this was not the time to pick an open fight with the new minister, even though he was not mentioned by name. At this time, it would be preferable to discuss the matter in private. The position of the party president ended up prevailing, however.

Another party decision referred to the policy of alliances for the 2024 municipal election. Coalitions with leftist parties and subtitles that supported Lula last year were authorized.

The PT, as expected, vetoed candidates from joining Bolsonarist politicians. There was, however, no veto to names of parties such as PP, Republicans or even PL that are not identified with the former president.
