PT group has row and accusation of transphobia – 07/11/2023 – Panel

PT parliamentarians and leaders engaged in a heated discussion in the WhatsApp group of the national directory of the acronym. National vice-president of the PT, Washington Quaquá was even accused of defending a transphobic position. He denied and complained about the adjective.

The discussion took place on Wednesday (5), when Quaquá shared a report from Itatiaia radio that spoke of a meeting between federal deputy Duda Salabert (PDT) and Gleisi Hoffmann, president of the PT. Party wings discuss the possibility that the PT will support the pedetista in the race for Belo Horizonte City Hall in 2024.

Quaquá, then, wrote: “we need to re-discuss our tactics to win over voters from the periphery. Removing Lulist voters who are conservative in customs to return to Lulism. And we need to seriously discuss this. This thing, for example, of Duda Salabert in one of the most important capitals in the country needs to be well discussed, because it has a national effect”.

Federal deputy Odair Cunha (PT-MG) replied that he thinks the PT should launch a candidate in Belo Horizonte. “We are already articulating this. This Duda story is going to make the PT disappear in the capital”.

Cunha tells the Panel that his argument has nothing to do with the congresswoman herself, but with the defense that the PT has a proper name, since it is a two-round election and this support for Duda, in case of defeat of the party, would still be possible. He also points to Federal Deputy Rogerio Correia (PT-MG) as the preferred candidate for the candidacy.

Janaína Oliveira, national LGBT secretary of the PT, criticized Quaquá’s text in the group and said he lacked effort to understand the impact of his speeches.

“Instead of being focused on changing conservative thoughts, you suggest that the PT adapt and prioritize this point. We seek to fight against oppression and not add to it. Deputy Duda is not just anyone, her last vote says a lot about that,” he said.

“When a PT vice-president has in his speech the transphobic focus hidden in an electoral speech, for me that, yes, is that it is something serious”, he completed. Duda is the first trans federal deputy in Minas Gerais.

Janaína also wrote that “representativeness made a lot of difference in the last elections, especially for Lula’s campaign and for the Brazilian left” and complains of Quaquá’s “constant aggressiveness”.

“These tactics of yours with your adjectives that white men love to point at black women have no place with me”, he concluded.

Quaquá retorted and said that the aggressiveness was from Janaina, “accusing anyone who disagrees with transphobia”, that she has a black grandmother and is descended from slaves and does not accept “depoliticized and authoritarian adjectives”.

The petista tells the Panel that he maintains what he wrote in the group and that “an identity agenda cannot be a priority agenda”.

“I think it’s a bad candidacy for us [a de Duda]. We have many names in BH that dialogue with our electoral base, with our history and with our commitment to the people. I defend the right of everyone to make the choice or sexual identity they want or have. But this is not my priority political debate, and neither should it be from the PT or the left”, he says.
