The Perseu Abramo Foundation (FPA), linked to the PT, signed a cooperation agreement last week with the Simón Bolívar Institute, an arm of the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to exchange experiences on topics such as popular participation and fake news.
The agreement was signed during a trip by Paulo Okamotto, president of the FPA, to Caracas between the 2nd and 5th of October.
Okamotto also met with Venezuela’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, and with representatives of the International University of Communications (Uicom), created by the government to “combat disinformation” that would harm the country.
Governed by Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela is a dictatorship that persecutes opponents and remains in power through elections considered fraudulent by the international community.
“It’s interesting to have contact with different experiences against the phenomenon of fake news”, says Okamotto about the visits.
He, who was last in the country in 2010, claims to have noticed an impoverishment in society since then.
“This is largely due to the violent blockade that has strangled the Venezuelan economy in recent years,” he said. “At the same time, there is a bourgeoisie that is trying to increase local production, especially of food.”
Okamotto also stated that he prefers not to pass judgment on the Venezuelan regime.
“Venezuela has social networks, opposition, functioning parties, press. It’s not the same as democracy in Switzerland or Sweden. Each one has their own model. I like to respect the self-determination of the people,” he declared.
