Lula calls for the release of Hamas hostages and Israel’s ceasefire

In a note published this Wednesday morning (11), President Lula (PT) appealed to the UN Secretary General and the international community to make a joint effort to release the hostages kidnapped by Hamas, as well as the Israel’s ceasefire.

Without classifying Hamas as a terrorist faction, the president said that “children could never be taken hostage” and that it was necessary to “use all resources to put an end to the most serious violation of human rights in the conflict in the Middle East.”

Brazil occupies the provisional presidency of the Security Council of the United Nations (UN) during this month of October.

I want to make an appeal to the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, and to the international community so that, together and urgently, we use all resources to put an end to the most serious violation of human rights in the conflict in the Middle East.

Children could never be taken hostage, no matter where in the world. Hamas must release Israeli children who have been kidnapped from their families.

Israel must cease bombing so that Palestinian children and their mothers can leave the Gaza Strip across the border with Egypt. There needs to be a minimum of humanity in the insanity of war. An international humanitarian intervention is urgently needed. A ceasefire is urgently needed in defense of Israeli and Palestinian children.

Brazil, in the provisional presidency of the UN Security Council, will join the efforts to bring the conflict to an immediate and definitive end. And he will continue to work to promote peace and defend human rights in the world.

Following the diplomatic line adopted by Brazil, last Tuesday (10), the government leader in the Senate, Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), said that the UN Security Council should go “far beyond a declaration” and proclaim an immediate ceasefire to the conflict.

Since the attacks on Israel began last weekend, the Brazilian government has avoided classifying Hamas as terrorists under the justification of maintaining the country’s “neutrality” in relation to international conflicts.

Another factor that has drawn attention is that while the government claims to be committed to appeasing the conflict, figures from the extreme left and the government base are trying to equate the responsibilities of the two sides involved in the war. Leftists have even used social media to publicly proclaim their support for Hamas terrorism.
