PSD grows and reaches the mark of 150 mayors in São Paulo – 06/07/2023 – Panel

PSD leaders estimate that the party recently reached the mark of 150 mayors in São Paulo, in continuous growth since last year’s elections and consolidating itself as one of the largest in the state.

With the recent crisis that took the PSDB out of command of the state government and the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo, the PSD has appeared as the preferred destination of mayors who have left the acronym.

One of the reasons for the migration of representatives from Toucans and other parties is the strong presence of Gilberto Kassab, president of the PSD, in the administration of Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans). As Secretary of Government, he is responsible for liaising with mayors and deputies.

The former minister frequently states that the movement has been happening organically and that as secretary he equally serves representatives of all parties.

Aiming at the 2024 election, mayors also tend to migrate to parties with a large federal bench, which means more money from the electoral fund and advertising time on radio and TV.

The PSD elected 65 mayors in 2020 and retained 46, after the Tucan attacks that inflated the party in a strategy linked to the electoral projects of João Doria (former PSDB), who aimed at the Presidency of the Republic, and Rodrigo Garcia (PSDB), who tried to remain in the Palácio dos Bandeirantes, both without success.

At the end of last year, according to estimates by party chiefs, the PSD had around 70 mayors.
