State deputy Rodrigo Lorenzoni (PL-RS) presented a PEC (Proposed Amendment to the Constitution) with the aim of transforming the official symbols of Rio Grande do Sul (the flag, coat of arms and anthem) into immutable in their entirety .
The proposal, which may be voted on in the Legislative Assembly of RS on Tuesday (13), emerged in reaction to the criticism that the black movement from Rio Grande do Sul has made in recent years to the state anthem, which contains a passage identified as racist.
“People who do not have virtue end up being slaves”, says the verse, which would convey the idea that people are enslaved for not having qualities.
In 2021, five councilors from the so-called Black Bench of Porto Alegre City Council remained seated during the performance of the anthem, in protest. Currently, three of these councilors are state deputies.
“While countless states, and even countries, review symbols that refer to slavery and colonialism, Rio Grande do Sul can walk in the opposite direction. This PEC is racist, unconstitutional and extremely authoritarian”, says state deputy Matheus Gomes ( PSOL).
In an interview with the Gaucho Legislative website, Lorenzoni said that Gomes does not want to defend, but rewrite the history of Rio Grande do Sul.
So far, Governor Eduardo Leite (PSDB) has not commented on the issue. Deputy Frederico Antunes (PP), leader of the government in the Assembly, is one of the signatories of the PEC.
