Project offers free workshops for the environmental preservation of Sumaúma Park

Manaus (AM) – The project “Reconectar e Conservar” offers free workshops on Non-Conventional Food Plants (PANCs) and how to take advantage of them, and on home composting from leftover food, respectively. The actions take place on Wednesday (23) and Thursday (24) of this month, at the State Center for Living Together with the Family Father Pedro Vignolia, located in the Cidade Nova neighborhood. You do not need to register to participate and the activities are free.

The “Reconectar e Conservar” project has the mission of raising awareness among the population and strengthening the conservation network in favor of the Sumaúma State Park and the urban forest remnants, located at Avenida Bacuri, s/n, in the Cidade Nova neighborhood, in the North Zone of city.

Reconectar e Conservar is developed by the Sumaúma Institute, with the support of Banco da Amazônia (BASA) and the Federal Government. Started in April this year, the project has developed a series of socio-environmental activities in Sumaúma Park and its surroundings. The approach includes holding free workshops, lectures and presentations in schools and communities.

Over four months, the project has already been present in four schools and eight communities, impacting more than 570 people, as explained by Antônio Augusto de Oliveira Leite, CEO of the Sumaúma Institute.

“The purpose [do projeto] is to make people aware of the existence of the Sumaúma Park and its importance in the local ecosystem, especially in the conservation of Amazonian species. In schools and communities, we take themes related to the connection of people with nature, the selective collection of solid waste and non-conventional food plants (PANCs), for example”,

According to him, for children, the team uses puppet theater and the staging of legends from Amazonian mythology to address these issues.

“We also work with elderly people, as we understand that the community, 100% involved, only has to collaborate in valuing and protecting urban forest remnants”,

Created in 2003, the Sumaúma State Park is the first Conservation Unit (UC) located in the capital of Amazonas. Covering an area of ​​52.8 hectares (ha), the site holds important native species of the Amazonian flora. In addition, the Park is one of the few areas of native forest preserved in the city, which reinforces the importance of the project.

“We have an open agenda for organizations, companies, schools and communities that wish to receive the project. By the end of September, we intend to reach two thousand people, making an impact on their perception of nature and the green spaces that surround them and their importance”,
