Project celebrates black awareness month with samba roots workshops in Manaus

Event seeks to promote the construction of musical knowledge for children, young people and adults
Manaus (AM) – The second edition of the project “Do Quilombo se made samba root” opens registrations this Thursday (19). The classes will be free and will take place in the Pagode do Quilombo space, located in the Praça 14 de Janeiro neighborhood, in Manaus.
The initiative aims to promote the construction of musical knowledge among children, young people and adults, strengthening the culture of black and quilombola populations that make up the traditional community.
According to Andarilha from Caldo Negro Produções, producer of the project, the idea is to expand the reach of cultural practices beyond the territory of the quilombo community and encourage the protagonism of quilombolas through the teaching and learning of samba roots.
“It is important to highlight that for a long time the historical relevance of black populations in the Amazon has been questioned, so our objective is to affirm the contribution of these people to the construction of Amazonian cultural identity, guaranteeing cultural rights and the right to memory”
he said.
The workshops will take place on 6 Saturdays, starting on November 4th, the month in which Black Awareness Day is celebrated. In total, the project will open registrations for two classes with theoretical and practical classes in agogô, guitar, cavaquinho, tantan, tambourine, surdo and tambourine, which will be taught by 8 musical instructors.

About the project
‘From Quilombo samba root was made’ is one of the projects included in the Manaus Faz Cultura 2023 Public Notice, from Manaus City Hall, and serves the municipality’s Itinerant Culture Program.
The inspiration for the project occurred in 2020, when Rafaela Fonseca, general director, was included in a notice from the Aldir Blanc law, with which she held several workshops in the community, including percussion workshops that were taught by local musicians.
From this came the desire to continue sharing musical knowledge with people beyond the community. Thus, the first edition of the project took place at the beginning of this year, with approval at Manaus Faz Cultura 2022. The classes received more than 150 students who signed up and participated in the workshops.
With the success of the first edition, Rafaela Fonseca, with the support of Crioulas do Quilombo, planned the second edition with the aim of reaching more people who identify with the project. With approval, the general director believes that the second edition is a great opportunity for both those who have already participated and for those who have the opportunity to participate in classes.
“I believe that projects like this always bring benefits to the community. Showing that we can always learn and be with instructors who carry the cultural baggage of the world of samba and teach what they learned is very good”,
said Rafaela.
With the application of cultural laws and the opening of notices at local and national level, the expectation is that in the future the project will take place annually and be part of Quilombo’s programming.
About Quilombo
Known for preserving the memory of black Amazonians and for housing the heritage of black people from Maranhão and former slaves who migrated from the city of Alcântara, Quilombo Urbano do Barranco de São Benedito is located in the Praça 14 neighborhood, Avenida Japurá, in Manaus.
Certified by the Palmares Foundation as an urban quilombo in 2014, the territory was the second in Brazil to receive recognition and is a historical and cultural reference for blackness in the capital of Amazonas.
With the arrival of the people of Maranhão to the city, many cultural practices were brought and developed in the Amazonian territory and today make up the local identity framework. Some manifestations were and are still transmitted from generation to generation among descendants.
Currently, the community develops social museology programs, projects and actions that contribute to the recognition and appreciation of Brazilian social memory. For this reason, the quilombo received the certificate of Memory Point from the Brazilian Institute of Museums.
