Breakdance competitions highlight the strong presence of Hip Hop in the State
Manaus (AM) – Whether in dance, music or visual arts, Hip Hop culture has a strong presence in the Amazonian scene. Showing all this influence, Breaking (or Breakdance) takes the final competitions of the “Festival Break The Floor América Latina 2023 (FBT)”, one of the biggest urban dance festivals in the country, to Teatro Amazonas. The event takes place this Friday (20th) at 8pm, with free entry.
FBT is a selective event that attracts several Breaking artists, in which renowned professionals will be present, collaborating with the encouragement of local and national culture, mainly contributing to the promotion of Hip Hop culture. The winners will receive the opportunity to travel to the city of Cannes, in the South of France, to compete with the best groups in the world.
According to the festival’s general director, Felipe Garcia, the proposal for the 5th edition of FBT is to involve all practicing artists from Latin America, mobilizing the city and making an impact on local commerce, hotels and tourism, an aspect that highlights the social nature of Breaking. In dance, in addition to the performances and acrobatic movements, the dancers (Bboys and Bgirls) also reflect their ideals.
Highlighting environmental activism, Felipe states that it is an immense responsibility to bring the festival back again.
“This year we have a very different proposal, we realize that Amazonas suffers from the environmental impact we are experiencing, so in this edition we developed environmental activities carried out in schools in Manaus”,
says the director.
Occupying new spaces
In addition to urban spaces, Breaking has been transforming sports courts into large dance floors. Promoting sport, dance marks its place in the Brazilian University Games (JUB’S). The modality, which is also a culture and a lifestyle, is the first sports dance to be part of the competition.
Bboy Ailton Esquerdo is the first Amazonian to represent Breaking at JUB’S, which is taking place in Joinville – SC. For the athlete, in addition to being a great responsibility to bear the name of the State, it is a gigantic and significant experience.
“It is very important for Amazonas to have a representative in the sport, this demonstrates that Breaking and Hip-Hop culture exists and is fostered and developed in the North region of the country, especially in JUB’S, as it brings this visibility and opportunity to establish connections and conversations with more experienced people who understand the criteria, the scoring system and the Olympic format of a Breaking Sport”,
points out Ailton, highlighting the movement’s debut at the 2024 Olympic Games.
