Politicians and influencers speak out against the Holocaust: “We remember”

Authorities and influencers from the left and right demonstrated this weekend on social media in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. The action titled “We Remember” was supported by names like Michele Bolsonaro and also by federal deputies Renata Abreu (Pode-SP) and Tabata Amaral (PSB-SP).

“In the concentration camps, the Nazis enslaved and murdered Jewish people, people with disabilities, gypsies, Poles, homosexuals and others,” said the deputy from the Brazilian Socialist Party. “And to this day we see, in authoritarian regimes, groups persecuted for being who they are,” continued Tabata.

The deputy’s publication generated hundreds of comments regarding her position, as left-wing parties have positioned themselves in favor of Hamas after the terrorist group’s attacks on Israel and relativized the group’s extreme violent actions.

“Today, Gaza is suffering a televised holocaust,” said one internet user. “It’s unbelievable to know that there are still people who defend Nazism and, worse, the dictatorship in Brazil,” replied another user.

In the publication, Tabata Amaral explained that January 27th is considered a memorial for the “millions of victims of the Holocaust”, as it was on that date that the largest Nazi extermination camp, Auschwitz, was liberated by Soviet troops. “That through awareness of the past we can overcome hatred and intolerance, so that tragedies like this never happen again,” he wrote.

The official account of Germany’s diplomatic representations in Brazil also took part in the action with photos of Consulate and Embassy employees holding posters with the English phrase “We Remember”, translated as “We remember”, in Portuguese.

“Germany recognizes its historical responsibility for the Holocaust and fights intensely against anti-Semitism around the world”, says one of the posts with a photo of the team at the German Consulate General in São Paulo. Consul General Dirk Augustin also participated in the action.

Other influencers, journalists and politicians engaged in the same action, such as former first lady Michele Bolsonaro, who appears holding the campaign poster in a publication by the Israeli Embassy in Brazil.

Federal deputy Renata Abreu (Pode-SP) produced a video to address the issue and ask “that the darkness of the past leads us to a future of hope and peace”, she said. “My total respect and solidarity with each victim,” she added.

Journalist Cesar Filho, from Record, also spoke about the action. “My respect, affection and admiration for the entire Jewish community,” he wrote on his social networks. Like him, presenter Reinalgo Gottino, who has 3.7 million followers on Instagram, also published a photo with the hashtag #WeRemember.

January 27th

The date of January 27th was chosen by the United Nations General Assembly to remember the Holocaust worldwide, a period of the Second World War (1939-1945) in which approximately 6 million of Jews were murdered. The deaths were ordered by the German Nazi party, led by Adolf Hitler, and also affected other groups, such as gypsies and people with disabilities.
