In seven hours of testimony to the Federal Police, the former Army commander, General Marco Antônio Freire Gomes, confirmed his participation in coup meetings and implicated former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) as responsible for maintaining the camps in front of the barracks. The military denied having been silent in the face of plans for democratic rupture and ignored the support it gave to coup camps.

Another commander of the Armed Forces, Carlos Baptista Júnior, from the Air Force, confirmed his participation in coup-friendly meetings at the Palácio da Alvorada. In conversations with interlocutors, Baptista Júnior has said that he showed opposition to the anti-democratic intentions of the past government.

Before the two’s statements to the PF, in February, the denunciation of Bolsonaro’s former aide-de-camp, Mauro Cid, and evidence obtained in the investigation had placed the focus on another former commander: Almir Garnier Santos, from the Navy, who would have supported coup attacks. In his statement to the police, the admiral chose to remain silent.

This Wednesday’s episode (6) of the Café da Manhã podcast talks about the testimonies of the commanders of the Armed Forces in the Bolsonaro government. The reporter from Sheet Cézar Feitoza tells the story behind the scenes and the repercussions of what the military told the Federal Police.
